High school is a time of transition and growth for every teenager. For me, it was a period filled with personal challenges and life-changing experiences that shaped the person I am today. As I reflect on my journey, from the struggles of my freshman year to the uncertainties of post-graduation, I can’t help but feel grateful for the people and experiences that have propelled me forward. Join me as I recount the pivotal moments that have helped me embrace change, overcome challenges, and look forward to a future full of possibilities.

The summer of 2019 marked a turning point in my life as I faced the prospect of another life-altering surgery. At just 14 years old, starting high school, I was overwhelmed by the uncertainty that lay ahead. After the surgery, I had to relearn how to walk from scratch, which left me frustrated and depressed. However, the unwavering support of my friends and family kept me going. With their encouragement, I persisted through the pain and managed to take my first steps towards an independent life, and straight into my second year of high school.
As 2020 rolled around, I encountered another significant hurdle when it came to understanding the current subject. My teacher’s doubts about my potential shook my confidence, but I refused to let it define me. Determined to prove them wrong, I dedicated myself to hard work and sought help when needed. In the end, I surpassed expectations and achieved a 90% average in the class. This experience taught me the power of determination and resilience in overcoming obstacles.
Confronting obstacles was not new to me. Throughout high school, my cerebral palsy presented social challenges, particularly when it came to accessibility and inclusion. In my grade 11 year, a school field trip to Canada’s Wonderland led me to grapple with the realisation that most of the rides and activities would be inaccessible to me. While trying to hide my disappointment, my friends showed immense compassion and spent a day with me at home, ensuring I didn’t feel left out. Their kindness and understanding reassured me that true friendships transcend limitations. This deep sense of community and my interest in advocating for those facing similar challenges helped inspire my future pursuits.

As I entered Grade 11 in 2022, I was honoured to be chosen as a Provincial Easter Seals Ambassador. Representing children and youth with physical disabilities allowed me to share my story, advocate for others, and develop valuable skills like public speaking and leadership. Balancing my responsibilities as an Ambassador with my academic commitments was challenging, but with support from family, teachers, and Easter Seals staff, I succeeded in both endeavors. This role not only helped me build important skills but also strengthened my determination to face the future regardless of its uncertainties.
As high school graduation approached, I found myself facing a new set of fears about what lay ahead. Leaving behind lifelong friends and family, taking on adult responsibilities, and deciding on a career path weighed heavily on my mind. While the choices ahead may seem daunting, I know that the experiences I’ve gained so far have prepared me for this moment. I will be pursuing Media Communications at Cambrian College and am excited about the possibilities it holds
My journey through high school has been a rollercoaster of emotions, challenges, and growth. From the hardships of my Grade 9 year to the confidence gained as an Easter Seals Ambassador, each step has led me closer to embracing change and the uncertainties of adulthood. As I embark on this new chapter in my life, I carry with me the lessons of resilience, determination, and the value of true friendship. While the future may be unknown, I’m ready to face it with open arms and an unwavering belief in my abilities. After all, life’s greatest rewards often come from embracing change and overcoming challenges.
