Rilynn’s Story

After years of uncertainty, Rilynn now has mobility equipment that better supports her everyday needs.

Rilynn is a happy child who loves bubbles, cartoons and anything to do with water. “She’s a really good kid,” shares her mom, Christine. At home, you’re likely to find Rilynn watching Thomas the Tank Engine or hanging out with her older sister.

Behind Rilynn’s bright personality, she has been navigating complex health and developmental challenges for years. Some of these challenges affect her mobility and everyday functioning, including hypotonia, which makes walking long distances difficult. Although Rilynn had been diagnosed with a few rare conditions, many of her symptoms remained unexplained.

“It’s been 12 years of searching for answers and trying to understand why she is the way she is,” shares Christine. That changed recently when a round of genetic testing revealed that Rilynn has ReNU syndrome, a newly identified rare genetic condition that can impact development and mobility. “The condition was just discovered in 2024,” continues Christine. “That’s why it is so rare. But we were told it will likely become a very common diagnosis for people with intellectual disabilities.”

“The stroller is part of her safety plan at school, and she uses it on the school bus. It’s a big part of her life.”

Although receiving a diagnosis brought relief for Rilynn’s family, it did not change the daily realities she continues to navigate. Rilynn tires easily from physical activity, which can make attending school and taking part in outings with her classmates and family challenging without the right support.

At 12 years old, Rilynn had outgrown the stroller she had used since she was a toddler. “Rilynn hasn’t had a new stroller for seven or eight years,” shares Christine. “We had problems getting one for quite some time, so she was in a tiny stroller that wasn’t fitting her properly.”

Through Easter Seals Ontario’s Equipment Funding Program, Rilynn’s family received funding for a new specialized stroller designed to better support her mobility, safety and daily needs. “The stroller is kind of like a hybrid of a stroller and a wheelchair,” explains Christine. “We’re so thankful to finally have a stroller that fits her properly… She can sit in it for longer periods of time than she could with the smaller one… You can tell she likes it a lot more.”

With the new stroller, Rilynn can participate more fully in everyday activities. “The stroller is part of her safety plan at school, and she uses it on the school bus,” explains Christine. “It’s a big part of her life.”

The stroller includes an extended canopy that helps protect Rilynn from sun exposure while outdoors. “It comes at an additional cost,” shares Christine, “but because one of Rilynn’s rare conditions increases her risk of developing cancer, it was something that was really important to us.”

The stroller also helped Rilynn take part in a recent class trip to Ripley’s Aquarium in Toronto. “It really helped out there because she wouldn’t have been able to walk the whole thing,” says Christine. “Having the stroller helps prevent her from becoming overtired and overwhelmed.”

“With the cost of everything going up, receiving the funding brought such a sense of relief to our family.”

While the stroller has made a meaningful difference in Rilynn’s daily life, purchasing specialized equipment like this can place a significant financial strain on families. “We would have had to use money we really don’t have right now,” shares Christine. “With the cost of everything going up, receiving the funding brought such a sense of relief to our family.”

Rilynn’s story is one example of the meaningful impact Easter Seals Ontario donors have on children and youth with physical disabilities across the province. Because of your support, children like Rilynn can continue exploring, learning and participating in the moments that make childhood special.
