Miracle’s Story

13-year-old Miracle meets each day with a natural enthusiasm that seems boundless. “He’s a happy child,” says his father, Believe. “He’s someone who is always looking forward to something. He wakes up early in the morning, he wants to have breakfast with everybody else, he wants to participate.”

For Miracle, however, participating is not always easy. He was born with cerebral palsy and struggles with muscle control and coordination. Miracle is not able to walk on his own and requires support for mobility. “Initially, we didn’t even have a wheelchair. We were pretty much carrying him on our back because he was still young. But as he grew older, this became more difficult,” says Believe.

Miracle, Believe and the rest of their family were living outside of Canada when Miracle was young. They made the decision to move to Canada, where they were introduced to Easter Seals Ontario. Through our Equipment Funding Program, Believe was able to receive support for a new wheelchair for Miracle—a piece of equipment that has had a profound impact on Miracle’s life.

“The new equipment has significantly enhanced Miracle’s mobility, making it easier to navigate both at home and in social settings,” says Believe. “This newfound independence has allowed Miracle to take part in playdates, school outings, and community events, which was much more difficult before.”

Miracle’s wheelchair has brought a world of new possibilities, from joining his family at the table at mealtime to engaging more fully in school activities. “He has even made a friend at school,” says Believe. “She’s able to feed him and push him around. How does that happen? Because the equipment enables that friendship to happen … The ability to move around freely has not only increased Miracle’s confidence but also encouraged friendships that might not have blossomed otherwise.”

Miracle is an outgoing kid, and he loves getting out and going on walks or attending church with his family. He connects to the singing and the music at church, and you will often find him listening to Christian music. Another activity that seems to bring Miracle joy is swimming, or any opportunity to be in water. “Being in the water, it relaxes him,” says Believe. “It really seems to be therapeutic for him.”

Miracle’s love of water extends beyond the pool and the beach — even shower time brightens his mood. “His favourite part of his day is when he’s going for a shower,” says Believe. That’s why the funding Easter Seals recently provided for a new bathing system has been so impactful.

“Bathing Miracle is a labour-intensive process that requires significant physical effort and careful maneuvering to ensure his safety,” explains Believe. The new specialized bathing equipment not only streamlines the bathing routine but also creates a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for Miracle. “I really wish you could see the happiness we see in him … As a family, we value the moments we spend together, and a safe bathing system allows for these moments to be filled with joy rather than anxiety.”

Reflecting on the impact of Easter Seals Ontario’s support, Believe shared, “This funding has done more than just provide equipment; it has facilitated a sense of belonging and normalcy in Miracle’s life. Witnessing Miracle navigate the world with joy and curiosity, and seeing the joy of connection unfold, is a testament to the significant positive changes that this support has brought into our lives.”

When family members back home see how well Miracle is doing these days, it often comes as a surprise. “I explain that it’s because he’s received support, he’s received love. The support is the love. You may see it as equipment, but for us, it is love.”
