Toronto, ON, January 27, 2014 — On February 27, sports celebrities, fans and Easter Seals supporters will gather at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York hotel for an entertaining evening to kick off Easter Seals’ 2014 fundraising year. Famed as Canada’s most prestigious sports dinner, the Rogers Conn Smythe Sports Celebrities Dinner & Auction will celebrate its 63rd anniversary and will feature an all-star line-up of sports celebrities, dinner and one of Canada’s best and largest sports memorabilia auctions with more than 220 pieces. The event also introduces the two 2014 Easter Seals Provincial Ambassadors, a boy and a girl chosen to represent children with physical disabilities across the province for the year.
This year, Gerry Dee, Canadian comedian, will emcee the evening and will introduce and interview this year’s head table guests which includes Carlos Delgado, Geraldine Heaney, James Hinchcliffe, Perdita Felicien, Dave Stewart, Gary Roberts, Scott Milanovich, Matt Hughes, and more.
“We are looking forward to an incredible evening with some of sport’s most celebrated personalities joining us at this year’s head table,” said Scott Morrison, Chair of the dinner committee and Easter Seals’ board member. “Easter Seals helps kids BE KIDS and it is through evenings like these that we are able to provide much needed programs and services to children with physical disabilities in our communities.”
The event has witnessed tremendous success over the past 62 years, raising more than $8.7 million for kids with physical disabilities. The Conn Smythe Dinner dates back to 1952, when the newly formed Ontario Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association (O.S.S.A.), held the first “Sports Celebrities Dinner” in Toronto. Past celebrity attendees include: Eric Lindros, Wayne Gretzky, Hank Aaron, Bobby Baun, Mike Bossy, Johnny Bower, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Carter, Don Cherry, Michael “Pinball” Clemons, Doug Gilmour, Scott Goodyear, Nancy Greene-Raine, Paul Henderson, Gordie Howe, Curtis Joseph, Joanne Malar, Marnie McBean, Bobby Orr, Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Barbara Ann Scott, Trish Stratus, Isiah Thomas, Johnny Unitas, Rick Vaive, Dave Winfield, and others.
For more than 90 years, Easter Seals has played an important role in providing support for children and youth with physical disabilities from all ethnic and religious backgrounds. Thanks to its generous donors, Easter Seals continues to offer programs to allow kids to experience freedom, independence and a sense of accomplishment.
