“I believe that parents must begin to teach self-advocacy at an early age. I believe parents must allow children to take a lead role in being agents of their own care & advocate for themselves when possible. I feel that if children are taught this skill, while they have parental support, this will very much benefit them in their adult life.”

Parents have a key role in helping their child to become independent adults and the child or youth has a role in developing the skills and knowledge they will need as adults. For children with disabilities it is very important that they learn how to advocate for themselves. For young people who may have limited communication ability it is very important that they know how to let people know their needs or get help.

Parent: Build Independence Skills

• Encourage your child to do more for themselves
• Let them take over responsibility for self care and daily activities at home
• If necessary, help your child learn to direct other people to provide them with care
• Provide opportunities for the child to ask questions and express their needs and opinions to adults
• Let your child take responsibility for making choices
• Encourage your child to advocate for themselves at school or in the community
• Help your child plan who they will need to talk to about the issue and practice what they plan to say

Child or Youth: Learn to Advocate

• Think about what you need or want to do in the future
• Learn to express your opinions and thoughts
• Start small and advocate for one thing you need, for example, an extension for an assignment
• Keep your message simple and clear, and present facts in a logical order
• Practice what you need to say in order to get what you want
• As a next step, look at an issue that impacts you and other people, for example, the need for a ramp at school or in the community
• Identify other people who can help to advocate and talk with them about what you can do as a group
• Develop a plan by identifying each step and who will be responsible for each action
• Afterwards, review the plan and what worked and what didn’t
• If necessary, revise the plan or develop a new strategy
• Each time you have success you will feel more confident and able to tackle another challenge

Toronto, ON, May 9, 2013 – On Thursday, May 23, Easter Seals Ontario will host the 2013 Toronto’s Tribute Dinner at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Toronto, recognizing the Honourable James M. Flaherty, P.C., M.P., Minister of Finance, and Michael Nobrega, President and CEO of OMERS. Bruce Power is once again the title sponsor of the Toronto’s Tribute Dinner and continues to be a strong supporter of Easter Seals Ontario.

“I am looking forward to celebrating the leadership and excellence of the Honourable James M. Flaherty and Michael Nobrega at this year’s Toronto’s Tribute Dinner,” said Duncan Hawthorne, President and CEO of Bruce Power, and Chair, 2013 Toronto’s Tribute Dinner. “We are proud to be a committed partner of Easter Seals Ontario, knowing the good work it does to help children with physical disabilities live their lives to the fullest.”

Every year, Easter Seals hosts this prominent fundraiser to recognize two individuals who have shown outstanding levels of excellence in their industries, in their communities, and for their continued support of children and youth with physical disabilities. This year’s entertainment includes pop violinist Tino, from Wellington Music and the Italian Tenors featuring Peter Marino, Charles Di Raimondo and Anthony Macri.

Since its inception, the Toronto’s Tribute has raised over $3.8 million, with proceeds helping families of children with physical disabilities across Ontario. Some of the past honourees include: The Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, and Joseph Mancinelli, International Vice President and Regional Manager for Central and Eastern Canada of the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) (2012); The Honourable John P. Manley, President and CEO of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and Brian Burke, President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs (2011); and The Honourable Dwight Duncan, Ontario’s Minister of Finance and Don MacKinnon, President of the Power Workers’ Union (2010).

Since 1922, Easter Seals Ontario has been offering programs and services to help children and youth with physical disabilities achieve a greater level of acceptance and independence. Easter Seals provides financial assistance for the purchase of costly mobility equipment and communication devices as well as fully accessible summer camp and funding for other summer recreational programs.
Toronto, Ontario, May 1, 2013 – On Sunday, May 26, competitive runners and leisure walkers alike can look forward to raising their heart rates and raising funds for children with physical disabilities at the Upper Canada Mall Easter Seals 10k Run, 5k Run & Walk. Taking place at Newmarket Riverwalk Commons for the second year in a row, the favoured site will host an anticipated 1,000 participants through the scenic Fairy Lake Park and Tom Taylor Trail system. Easter Seals Ontario is thrilled to welcome back Upper Canada Mall as the title sponsor for the event, the largest fundraising event for children with physical disabilities in Newmarket.

“Giving back to our great community is one of our core values at Upper Canada Mall. The entire mall team and many of our stores are proud to support Easter Seals Ontario, an organization that helps children with physical disabilities right here at home,” says Robert Horst, General Manager, Upper Canada Mall. “We are committed to helping kids with physical disabilities succeed and are thrilled to be back as the title sponsor of the 2013 Upper Canada Mall Easter Seals 10k Run, 5k Run & Walk.”

The race is accredited for competitive runners and will once again offer chip timing for both 10k and 5k runners. In addition, all participants will receive technical t-shirts and medals will be awarded to age category winners. A post-race party will be held with food for athletes, games and activities for the whole family, and an awards presentation.

Formerly known as the Easter Seals 10k Run, 5k Run & Walk founded by Joe Persechini, the event is York Region’s longest running fundraiser for children and youth with physical disabilities and was first held in 1976.

“We are thankful for the generosity and long-term support of Upper Canada Mall towards the Easter Seals 10k Run, 5k Run and Walk,” said Carol Lloyd, President & CEO, Easter Seals Ontario. “Proceeds from the Run lead to increased accessibility for Easter Seals children, allowing them to experience the joys of summer camp, greater independence and opportunities to more fully participate in their communities.”

Since 1922, Easter Seals Ontario has provided families of children with physical disabilities financial assistance for expensive mobility and communication devices such as walkers, braces, and wheelchairs, fully accessible Easter Seals camps, and alternative recreational programs. Easter Seals relies fully on donations from the public to offer its programs and services. For more information, visit www.eastersealsrun.com.
