When children usually begin walking, standing, sitting, Larisa noticed that her son, Vladislav, was not meeting those milestones.
At an early age, Vladislav was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, though Larisa can’t quite remember when that was.
Maybe that’s because her attitude has always been to move forward with whatever life hands her. “We live a usual life,” says Larisa. “I work, my son goes to school, spends time at summer camp or somewhere else with me. There are some difficulties of course connected with my son’s disabilities but we adjust.”
That doesn’t mean that the cost of mobility equipment didn’t surprise her. “Surely, mobility equipment is very costly. As a single mother, if there wasn’t support from charitable organizations like Easter Seals Ontario, I wouldn’t have been able to provide my son with the equipment to be more independent and our lives would be much harder.”
Larisa has relied on Easter Seals to help ease the financial burden that comes with raising a child with a physical disability. “We have been helped by Easter Seals since 2008 and it’s been invaluable. The first equipment we received was a wheelchair, then a bath seat, toilet frame and seat. It made it easier for me to transport Vlad and take care of him during bathing and toileting. In 2012, Easter Seals helped with a bath lift and last year with a commode chair.”
Larisa is grateful for the help that Easter Seals is able to provide thanks to support from its donors because as she puts it, “You make kids like my son feel normal.”
