While most of the world is preparing to send their kids back to school, parents Linda and Philip are wondering if their daughter Chloe will ever be able to walk or hold her own head up.
Chloe was born after a healthy pregnancy and delivery. It was not until she was a few months old that Linda and Philip noticed that something wasn’t quite right. Chloe was missing important milestones and it was clear that her muscle strength was not what it should be. Still, after months of appointments and medical testing on young Chloe, doctors could not pinpoint a diagnosis.
What is known is that Chloe suffers from a severe lack of muscle tone, meaning she cannot stand up on her own or support her head. Linda and Philip are not letting a lack of answers slow them down and are cherishing parenthood each day.
Despite their optimism, the family faces significant challenges. Thanks to help from Easter Seals Ontario, Linda and Philip were able to purchase Chloe’s first wheelchair. Prior to this, Chloe would flop to the side in anything she tried to sit in. It was dangerous for her spine and it slowed her cognitive development. Her specialized chair keeps Chloe in a safe, upright position and allows her to play games, look at books and eat meals properly.
“The chair affects everything,” says Linda. “It gives her access and because of the chair she is given a fair chance.”
Since receiving the chair with help from donors like you, they have noticed huge daily progress in Chloe’s development. Your support makes the purchase of expensive mobility equipment possible – opening up the world for Chloe and helping her to do what is most important, just be a kid!
Just like most children will need new boots for the winter or sandals in the summer, the needs of kids with physical disabilities are urgent every month of the year too. Equipment like standers, walkers and wheelchairs are as necessary to Easter Seals families as a backpack or a winter coat. However, mobility equipment cannot be picked up at the mall. It must be customized to fit and as they grow, adjustments and new equipment will be required. The expense for families is enormous and much of the financial burden is not covered by the government.
The best way you can support families like Chloe’s is with consistent, year-round donations made each month. For as much as the cost of your daily coffee, you can give a child like Chloe, a chance to just be a kid.
Whether you are able to make an immediate gift or sign up for our Monthly Giving Program, on behalf of Chloe and the 4000+ other Easter Seals children around Ontario, thank you for your support!
