Dear Easter Seals Camps,
“Where’s the place to make new friends and have fun?” reply “W-O-O-D-E-D-E-N” was how each morning started as campers, families and counsellors gathered around the flagpole each morning. Each morning we would head down to the flagpole for the morning ceremonies which would be fun and entertaining as the counsellors would “Sell the Sizzle,” promoting the various daily activities for the campers and families alike.
Camp Woodeden offers so much more than a camping experience for families. If offers the opportunity for children with special needs to really shine, stand out and be made to feel more special than they have experienced before. Every activity, sport, adventure, craft is designed for any child to participate regardless of any challenges they may face.
To support this further, the counsellors are like the icing on the cake as they really go out of their way to help the children, play with them, engage with them in the various activities, are understanding, show great compassion and care for the campers and offer a little respite for the parents. I cannot speak enough to how amazing the counsellors are, especially the counsellors from cabin Purple Fox (Emma, Howard, Jack, Megan, Megumi and Peggy), who went out of their way on so many occasions to make Dylan feel special, cared for and treated like a true friend. Also, a special thank you note to Sarah and the lifeguards at the pool who were always so welcoming to Dylan when he would have the biggest smile on his face knowing that he was going swimming.
From the rock-climbing wall, the swing, the rope course 20ft in the air, swimming, talent show, painting, cooking, clay shape creations, tie-dye shirt making, sledge hockey, adventure courses and so many more activities, Camp Woodeden carried forward on its promise to deliver an amazing camp experience for each camper. Dylan partook in so many of fun activities and carried a smile all day because of the opportunities that he had to partake in these activities, all of which we would never be able to find anywhere else or all in one amazing place.
In closing, I would like to send out a heartfelt sincere thank you to everyone involved in the pre-selection of having my son Dylan invited to attend camp Woodeden from August 4th to August 9th. It is truly hard to sum up my heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity that Dylan received in being invited to attend camp. The impact on Dylan was so positive and know that this helped him in so many ways as well as the impact it had on me seeing my son so happy and made to feel special by everyone involved, including the other families who we were able to bond with.
Finally, the way the week ended with the dinner/dance that truly tugged at my heart strings to see Dylan so exuberantly happy and blushing as so many of the counsellors danced with Dylan from the start of the dance until the very end.
As we were preparing to leave and say goodbye the Purple Fox cabin sang a personal goodbye song for Dylan which I know really touched his heart as well as mine. Thank you once again to everyone at Camp Woodeden and Easter Seals for the opportunity that Dylan had to be part of this amazing experience as he truly needed and deserved this for his well-being and healing and soul.
Paula, Dave and Dylan.
